Today’s Insight from AgingHere

Today's insight highlights the growing trend of seniors preferring to age in their homes rather than moving into senior living communities. According to a recent survey, 89% of aging adults favor aging in place due to reasons like independence, owning a mortgage-free home, and affordable living. While senior living communities offer better well-being, they must address concerns about affordability, privacy, and independence to attract more prospects.

Transylvania County, with a significant aging population (31.4% being 65 or older), exemplifies the importance of successful aging in place. Seniors there prioritize staying at home because of security, proximity to loved ones, and cherished memories. Achieving aging in place requires adapting the home environment for safety and establishing a robust support network using local resources.

In Pennsylvania, the Elder Cottage Housing Opportunity (ECHO) project provides an innovative, affordable housing solution for seniors. By placing small manufactured homes on friends' or relatives' properties, it offers independence and privacy. The rent is based on a percentage of the resident's income, making it accessible to more individuals.

Economist Rebekah Young highlights the need for reevaluating retirement planning, especially considering longer life expectancies and increasing long-term care requirements. With a significant proportion of older Canadians facing disabilities and residing in care facilities, the commonly suggested $1 million retirement savings may not be sufficient. Young advocates for greater government support and improved financial preparedness to ensure a secure and healthy retirement.

A new survey shows that 89% of aging adults prefer aging in their homes to moving into senior living communities, driven by a desire for independence (48%), owning a mortgage-free home (19%), and affordable living (11%). Although senior living communities offer better well-being, there's a need to address concerns about affordability, privacy, and independence. Highlighting efforts to maintain independence may help attract more prospects. Another study found that 93% of aging adults plan to age in place, using technology to support them. read more.

Scotiabank economist Rebekah Young emphasizes the need for a reevaluation of retirement planning, given longer life expectancies and increasing long-term care requirements. With nearly half of Canadians over 75 facing disabilities and three in ten over 85 residing in care facilities, the commonly cited $1 million retirement savings may prove inadequate.
