UC Davis Health has launched its Division of Geriatrics, Hospice, and Palliative Medicine, led by geriatrician and researcher Rebecca Boxer. The division aims to provide specialized care for older adults, address the shortage of geriatricians, and attract new faculty and funding in aging medicine. Caring for older adults can be financially challenging, but there are government programs available that pay family members for providing care. Three main options include Medicaid programs, special state programs for non-Medicaid recipients, and veterans benefits programs. Medicaid programs vary by state and allow seniors to hire a family member or friend as a caregiver, with eligibility determined by a Medicaid assessment. Some states offer specialized programs for specific conditions. Veterans benefits programs, such as Veteran-Directed Home and Community-Based Services (VD-HCBS) and Aid & Attendance or Housebound programs, provide financial assistance to veterans for in-home care, including hiring family caregivers.
